    Hungary construction volume decreased by 3.4% in March

    The volume of construction output, based on raw data, was 3.4% lower in March 2020 than a year earlier, Hungarian Central Statistical Office latest data show.

    Output of the two main groups of construction developed inversely: in the construction of buildings it grew by 0.3%, in civil engineering works went down by 10.0%.

    Based on seasonally and working day adjusted indices construction output lessened by 5.2% compared to the February data. In the 1st quarter construction producer prices increased by 8.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.

    In March 2020, compared to the same month of the previous year

    The output of the two main groups of construction developed inversely: in the construction of buildings it rose by 0.3%, in civil engineering decreased by 10.0% compared to the high base of the previous year.

    Out of the divisions of construction, output volume went down by 4.0% in the construction of buildings and by 13.7% in civil engineering while specialised construction activities were higher by 2.6% year-on-year.

    The volume of new contracts decreased by 9.9%, within it the volume of new contracts concluded for the construction of buildings was 31.4% lower, the volume for civil engineering works was 18.9% higher than one year earlier.

    The volume of the February end-of –month stock of contracts at construction enterprises was 16.3% lower than at the end of March 2019. The volume of contracts increased by 2.7% for the construction of buildings and decreased by 24.4% for civil engineering works.

    Hungary: Industrial production decreased by 5.6% in March

    In March 2020 the volume of industrial production declined by 5.6% year-on-year. Based on working-day adjusted data, production fell by 10.0%, Hungarian Central Statistical Office latest data show.

    The volume of industrial production decreased by 5.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

    Industrial output in March – according to seasonally and working-day adjusted indices – was 10.4% below the level of the previous month.

    The volume of industrial export dropped by 8.1% year-on-year. Transport equipment export, representing a 32% weight within export sales in manufacturing fell by 22%; the export in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products accounting for a 17% weight declined by 1.8%.

    Industrial domestic sales decreased by 0.8%, within it domestic sales in manufacturing were 1.9% lower compared to the same month of the previous year.

    Within industry production declined by 5.7% in the decisive weight (95%) representing manufacturing, while it dropped by 27% in the small weight representing mining and quarrying. The output of energy industry (electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply) rose by 5.4%.

    Industrial production increased only in Pest region (10.1%), Southern Transdanubia (by 5.0%), and the Northern Great Plain (by 3.3%).

    In the other regions volume decreases between 3.0% and 16.5% were recorded, the highest one in Western Transdanubia.

    In Hungary prices increased by 2.4% in April

    • Consumer prices were 2.4% higher on average in April 2020 than a year earlier.
    • Significant price rises were measured over the past year for food as well as alcoholic beverages and tobacco.
    • Food prices increased at a higher rate than usual compared to March, which may have been caused by the effects of the corona virus epidemic.
    • Motor fuel prices went down markedly over a month as a result of significantly falling oil prices.

    Compared to March 2019, food prices went up by 8.7%, within which pork prices became 28.9%, the price of other meat preparations 22.3%, that of seasonal food items (potatoes, fresh vegetables and fruits) 15.1%, sugar prices 14.1% and salami, sausages and ham prices 12.5% higher.

    The price of alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose by 7.2% on average, within which tobacco prices by 11.1%. Consumers paid 3.0% more for services, within which the price of games of chance increased by 7.8% and rent by 5.6%. Motor fuel prices were cut by 22.7%.

    In January–April 2020 compared to the same period of the previous year consumer prices went up by 3.9% on average.

    Number of nights spent by tourists in Hungary fell by 65% in March

    As a result of the coronavirus epidemic, in March 2020, the number of nights spent by international tourists fell by 68% and that of nights spent by domestic tourists by 61% compared to the same period of the previous year in hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes and community hostels.

    Total gross sales revenues declined by 60% at current prices in commercial accommodation establishments.

    In March 2020, compared to the same month of the previous year the number of international tourist arrivals decreased by 74% and of international tourism nights by 68%. 107 thousand guests spent 316 thousand tourism nights in commercial accommodation establishments.

    All accommodation types and regions saw large declines.

    Accommodation establishments in Budapest and Western Transdanubia recorded a decrease of almost 70% in the number of tourism nights. Compared to March 2019, the number of tourism nights fell to a third from Europe and to less than a quarter from Asia and America.

    The number of Russian and Ukrainian tourism nights roughly halved with a lower-than-average decline. Guests from our most important sending country, Germany, spent 62% fewer nights in Hungarian accommodation establishments.

    Domestic arrivals and tourism nights were down by 64% and by 61% respectively to 166 thousand arrivals and 381 thousand tourism nights.

    Compared to March 2019, the number of tourism nights fell by more than half in all regions and by more than two thirds in the Budapest-Central Danube region and at Lake Tisza.

    Sales of retail shops grew by 3.5% in Hungary

    In March 2020, the volume of sales in retail shops increased by 4.4% according to raw data and by 3.5% when adjusted for calendar effects compared to the same period of the previous year, show Hungarian Central Statistical Office latest data.

    Due to the worsening epidemiological emergency, regulatory restrictions were gradually introduced, which also affected retailing, with an impact on the turnover of all business types.

    The volume of sales, adjusted for calendar effects, rose by 12.7% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 0.5% in non-food retail shops and decreased by 16.7% in automotive fuel retailing.

    In January–March 2020, the volume of sales – also according to calendar adjusted data – was 7.2% higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

    Main sales data in Hungarian retail

    The volume of sales increased by 12.7% in specialized and non-specialized food retailing. The volume of sales grew by 15% in non-specialized food and beverages shops accounting for 77% of food retailing and by 4.8% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores.

    The turnover of non-food retailing increased by a total of 0.5%. Sales rose in non-specialized shops dealing in pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetics goods (38%), as well as in manufactured goods (0.9%). The volume of sales fell in textiles, clothing and footwear shops (-51%), second hand goods shops (-26%), books, computer equipment and other specialized stores (-14%), as well as in furniture and electrical goods stores (-9.3%).

    The volume of mail order and internet retailing accounting for 7.9% of all retail sales and involving a wide range of goods rose by 41%, continuing a multi-year expansion.

    The volume of sales in automotive fuel stations decreased by 16.7%.

    Sales in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories stores not belonging to retail data decreased by 4.6%.
