    Industrial production up by 12.4% in euro area and 11.4% in EU

    In May 2020 industrial production rose by 12.4% in the euro area and by 11.4% in the EU, compared with April 2020, according to estimates from Eurostat.

    In April 2020, industrial production fell by 18.2% both in the euro area and in the EU.

    In May 2020 compared with May 2019, industrial production decreased by 20.9% in the euro area and by 20.5% in the EU.

    In the euro area in May 2020, compared with April 2020, production of durable consumer goods rose by 54.2%, capital goods by 25.4%, intermediate goods by 10.0%, non-durable consumer goods by 2.8% and energy by 2.3%.

    In the EU, production of durable consumer goods rose by 47.7%, capital goods by 24.8%, intermediate goods by 8.7%, energy by 2.5% and non-durable consumer goods by 1.8%.

    The highest increases were registered in Italy (+42.1%), France (+20.0%) and Slovakia (+19.6%).

    The largest decreases were observed in Ireland (-9.8%), Croatia (-3.5%) and Finland (-1.3%).

    In April 2020 the volume of industrial production declined by 36.8% year-on-year in Hungary, as KSH data shows.

    Based on working-day adjusted data, production fell by 36.6%.

    The economic effects caused by the coronavirus epidemic were significant in this period.

    The manufacture of transport equipment fell outstandingly, to one-fifth, due to the temporary total or partial production stoppage.

    The manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco products declined to a lesser degree, while the manufacture basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations grew almost by one-fifth.

    The volume of industrial export dropped by 43% year-on-year. Transport equipment export, representing a 15% weight within export sales in manufacturing fell outstandingly, by 77%, while the export in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products accounting for a 19% weight declined by 23%.

    Industrial domestic sales decreased by 18.6%, within it domestic sales in manufacturing were 25% lower compared to the same month of the previous year.

    Industrial production at an all time low in Slovakia

    In April, industrial production reached the historical minimum since the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic, decreasing by 42 % year-on-year.

    This fall was mainly affected by a sharp decrease in manufacture of transport equipment by 78,9 %.

    This situation was significantly influenced by a cessation or restriction of the production at four Slovak car manufacturers as well as the production restrictions at subcontractors in the car industry as a whole, which responded to the measures taken against the spread of the COVID-19 in Europe.

    The most significant drop was recorded in manufacture of transport equipment by 78,9 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 42,9 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 34,5 %, manufacture of metal and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 26,2 % and manufacture of electrical equipment by 41,8 %.

    Compared with April 2019, in terms of the main industrial groupings, production of investment goods decreased by 62,8 %, production of durable consumer goods by 52,7 %, production of intermediate goods by 32,2 %, production of non-durable consumer goods by 30,3 % and production relating to energy by 5,1 %.

    In March 2020, the COVID-19 containment measures widely introduced by EU nations had a significant impact, as industrial production fell by 11.3% in the euro area and by 10.4% in the EU, compared with February 2020, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

    In February 2020, industrial production fell by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU.

    In March 2020 compared with March 2019, industrial production decreased by 12.9% in the euro area and by 11.8% in the EU.

    In the euro area in March 2020, compared with February 2020, production of durable consumer goods fell by 26.3%, capital goods by 15.9%, intermediate goods by 11.0%, energy by 4.0% and non-durable consumer goods by 1.6%.

    In the EU, production of durable consumer goods fell by 23.8%, capital goods by 15.1%, intermediate goods by 9.9%, energy by 3.5% and non-durable consumer goods by 1.2%.

    Italy tops industrial production decline

    Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in industrial production were registered in Italy (-28.4%), Slovakia (-20.3%) and France (-16.4%).

    The highest increases were observed in Ireland (+15.5%), Greece and Finland (both +1.9%) and Lithuania (+0.7%).

    In March 2020 the volume of industrial production declined by 5.6% year-on-year. Based on working-day adjusted data, production fell by 10.0%, Hungarian Central Statistical Office latest data show.

    The volume of industrial production decreased by 5.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

    Industrial output in March – according to seasonally and working-day adjusted indices – was 10.4% below the level of the previous month.

    The volume of industrial export dropped by 8.1% year-on-year. Transport equipment export, representing a 32% weight within export sales in manufacturing fell by 22%; the export in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products accounting for a 17% weight declined by 1.8%.

    Industrial domestic sales decreased by 0.8%, within it domestic sales in manufacturing were 1.9% lower compared to the same month of the previous year.

    Within industry production declined by 5.7% in the decisive weight (95%) representing manufacturing, while it dropped by 27% in the small weight representing mining and quarrying. The output of energy industry (electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply) rose by 5.4%.

    Industrial production increased only in Pest region (10.1%), Southern Transdanubia (by 5.0%), and the Northern Great Plain (by 3.3%).

    In the other regions volume decreases between 3.0% and 16.5% were recorded, the highest one in Western Transdanubia.

    In March, industrial production in Slovakia decreased by 19,6 % year-on-year, reaching the lowest level since May 2009, show the latest data published by Statistical Office of The Slovak Republic.

    The development was affected by a drop in manufacturing by 21,4 % and in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 10,4 % and by an increase in mining and quarrying by 7,2 %.

    The most significant drop was recorded in manufacture of transport equipment by 38,3 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment by 18,2 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic and other non-metallic mineral products by 16,1 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 41,1 % and other manufacture, repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 30,7 %.

    The total production saw an increase in manufacture of electronic equipment by 5 %, mining and quarrying by 7,2 % and in manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco products by 0,7 %.

    Compared with March 2019, in terms of the main industrial groupings, production of durable consumer goods decreased by 41,5 %, production of investment goods by 31,3 %, production relating to energy by 10 %, production of non-durable consumer goods by 9,7 % and production of intermediate goods by 7,7 %.
