    2.560 euros, Italian monthly households expenditure in 2019

    In 2019, the estimate of mean monthly consumption expenditure for households residing in Italy was 2.560 euros in current values, substantially unchanged to 2018 (-0.4%) and still far from 2011 levels (2.640 euros per month), followed by two years of strong shrinkage not recovered during the following years.

    According to Istat provisional estimates, excluding expenditure on food and housing, in the first quarter of 2020 mean monthly consumption expenditure decreased by more than 12% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, as a result of the health crisis.

    Expenditure levels in the North west area, 740 euros higher than in the South

    As in the past, the highest expenditure levels were observed in the North west area (2,810 euros), in the North east (2,790) and in the Centre (2,754 euros); the lowest levels, in the Islands (2,071) and in the South (2,068 euros).

    In the North west, in absolute terms, household expenditure was on average about 740 euros higher than in the South and the Islands, that means almost 36% in relative terms.

    Industrial production index decreased by 19.1% in Italy

    Istat shows that in April 2020 the seasonally adjusted industrial production index decreased by 19.1% compared with the previous month.

    The change of the average of the last three months with respect to the previous three months was -23.2%.

    The calendar adjusted industrial production index decreased by 42.5% compared with April 2019 (calendar working days being 21 versus 20 days in April 2019).

    The unadjusted industrial production index decreased by 40.7% compared with April 2019.

    Istat forecast a strong GDP contraction in 2020 at -8.3%

    The Italian Institute of Statistics (Istat) forecast a strong GDP contraction in 2020 (-8.3%) followed by a recovery in 2021 (+4.6%).

    This year, the fall of GDP will be determined mainly by domestic demand net of inventories (-7.2 p.p.) due to the contraction of household and NPISH consumption (-8.7%) and of investments (-12.5%).

    Net exports and inventories will also contribute negatively to GDP growth (respectively -0.3 p.p. and -0.8 p.p.).

    Employment in sharp decline

    Employment trend will follow the GDP trend with a sharp fall in 2020 (-9.3%) and a recovery in 2021 (+4.1%).

    The trend of unemployment rate will be different because it reflects the ricomposition between unemployed and inactive people and the fall in hours worked.

    The households final consumption expenditure deflator will display a negative trend this year (-0.3%) and will marginaly recover the next (+0.7%). followed by a recovery in 2021 (+4.6%).

    Services turnover index decreased by 6.2% in Italy

    In the first quarter of 2020 the services turnover index decreased by 6.2% compared to the previous quarter, latest Istat data shows.

    In particular the index decreased in accommodation and food service activities (-24.8%), transportation and storage (-6,4%), Wholesale trade, trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-6.0%), administrative and support service activities (-2.0%), information and communication (-0.9%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (-0.4%).

    In the first quarter of 2020 the services turnover index decreased by 7.2% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.

    In particular, the index decreased by 24.1% for accommodation and food service activities, by 7.8% for wholesale trade, trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, by 5.3% for transportation and storage, by 2.8 for administrative and support service activities, by 2.6% for professional, scientific and technical activities and by 2.4% for information and communication activities.

    Largest fall in Italy’s construction sector since 1995

    In March 2020 construction output fell by 36.2% in the month on month series, showing the largest fall on record since the series began, back in 1995.

    In the first quarter of 2020, production in construction was down 6.8% when compared with the previous quarter.

    The year on year unadjusted index for construction output sharply dropped by 33.1%, while the calendar adjusted index fell dramatically by 35.4% (22 calendar working days versus 21 days in March 2019).

    Italy: Industrial new orders index decreased by 26.5% in March

    The seasonally adjusted industrial new orders index decreased by 26.5% compared to February (-29.9% in domestic market and -21.4% in non-domestic market), Istat shows.

    The first quarter decreased by 9.5% compared to the last quarter of 2019 (-12.2% in domestic market and -5.7% in non-domestic market).

    With respect to the same month of the previous year the calendar adjusted industrial turnover index decreased by 25.2% (-27.6% in domestic market and -20.7% in non-domestic market).

    Calendar working days in March 2020 were 22, one more than March 2019.

    The unadjusted industrial new orders index decreased by 26.6% with respect to the same month of the previous year (-29.3% in domestic market and -23.1% in non-domestic market).

    The seasonally adjusted volume turnover index (only for the manufacturing sector) decreased by 24.4% compared to the previous month; the first quarter decreased by 6.8% compared to the fourth quarter of the last year. The calendar adjusted volume turnover index decreased by 24.7% with respect to the same month of the previous year.

    Italy exports and imports fell in March 2020

    In March 2020, compared with the same month of the previous year, both exports and imports fell (-13.5% and -18,1% respectively), show latest Istat data.

    Outgoing flows decreased by -12.2% for EU countries and by -14.7% for non EU countries.

    Incoming flows dropped by -15.5% for EU area and by -21.7% for non EU area. The trade balance in March 2020 amounted to +5,685 million Euros (5,082 million Euros for non EU area and +603 million Euros for EU countries).

    In March 2020, import prices decreased by 3.1% on monthly basis (unchanged for the the euro zone, -5.9% for the non-euro zone). Over the last three months, compared to the previous three months, import prices decreased by 2.0% (-0.3% for the euro zone and -3.6% for the non-euro zone).

    Import prices decreased by 5.1% in March 2020, compared to the same month a year ago (-0.7% for the euro zone, -9.2% for the non-euro zone).
