Polish PGNiG Group to buy Danish natural gas from Ørsted

Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) and Ørsted A/S have signed a multi-year contract for the sale and purchase of natural gas.

The agreement covers a total volume of approx. 70 TWh (6.4 bcm) to be supplied between January 1st 2023 and October 1st 2028.

Denmark is linked to Germany via the interconnector at Ellund and will be linked to Norway and Poland via the Baltic Pipe which is currently under construction.

Under this agreement, Ørsted will resell some of the natural gas that it receives from the Danish part of the North Sea to PGNiG, e.g., from the Tyra field, which is Denmark’s largest gas reservoir.

Currently, the Tyra platform is under redevelopment to extend its operational life by at least 25 years. For this reason, production from Tyra was halted in 2019 and is expected to resume in 2022.

  • Toyota and PGNiG to build a pilot hydrogen refuelling station in Poland

Toyota and PGNiG to build a pilot hydrogen refuelling station in Poland

Toyota Motor Poland and Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) signed an agreement on cooperation in advancing hydrogen technology in Poland.

A pilot hydrogen refuelling station will be built under the agreement.

PGNiG’s hydrogen research programme unveiled in May provides for the production of hydrogen, including green hydrogen using renewable energy sources, hydrogen storage and distribution, and industrial applications.

The operation of a hydrogen refuelling station, to be built in the Wola district of Warsaw, is also part of the programme.

PGNiG has already signed a contract with a consortium of Poland- and UK-based companies for the design and construction of the station.

Hydrogen as clean fuel for future vehicles on the Polish market

The joint operations are intended to introduce hydrogen as a clean fuel for zero-emission fuel cell vehicles on the Polish market. Hydrogen has been hailed by experts as a fuel of the future.

Toyota Motor Poland is preparing to launch the second generation of its Mirai passenger car next year. It is the first hydrogen-powered sedan car manufactured on a mass scale.

Compared with the previous version, the new generation fuel cell car has a driving range extended by 30%, to 650–900 km on a single tank.

Refuelling will only take a few minutes, making the car fully functional and environmentally friendly.

Polish Oil and Gas Company received its LNG delivery no. 100

Polish Oil and Gas Company has received the hundredth supply of liquefied natural gas at the LNG Terminal Of President Lech Kaczyński in Świnoujście.

The jubilee load came from Qatar. So far PGNiG has imported approximately 11 bcm of LNG after regasification.

The methane carrier Al Safliya delivered about 90 thousand tons of LNG from Qatargas on Friday, July 3rd 2020. After regasification, this corresponds to approx. 120 mcm of natural gas.

First LNG transport, almost five years ago

The first two LNG loads that has arrived to Świnoujście at the turn of 2015 and 2016 were used for the technical start-up of regasification installations in the terminal.

The first commercial delivery took place in June 2016.

Since then, the number of deliveries as well as their volume have been gradually increasing from year to year.

Among the hundred deliveries so far, 67 came from Qatar, 21 from the USA and 11 from Norway. In March 2020, one LNG load arrived from Trinidad and Tobago.

In over four years, the total volume of natural gas imported this way amounted to approx. 11 bcm.

Liquefied natural gas also has an increasingly clear share in PGNiG imports. While in 2016 it accounted for approx. 8 percent, in 2019 it exceed 23 percent.
