Scania to invest over 1 billion SEK in a battery assembly plant

Scania plans to invest well over 1 billion SEK in a battery assembly plant in Södertälje, Sweden.

The initial step is a 18,000-square metre facility and the construction will start early 2021 with the aim to be fully operational by 2023.

As a result, the plant will assemble battery modules and packs from cells which will be delivered from Northvolt’s battery factory in Skellefteå, Sweden.

Employing a staff of 200, most recruited from within the company, the battery assembly plant will be highly automated.

In 2015, Scania started series production of hybrid buses and in 2019 of its first fully electric bus range.

This was followed by the introduction of Scania’s plug-in hybrid truck and the fully electric truck. Series production of the electric truck starts in 2021.

Coop to use battery electric Scania truck in Denmark

Denmark’s largest retail company Coop will deploy a battery electric Scania truck in its city distribution operations.

The adoption of heavy vehicles that operate on renewable biofuels and hybrid electric solutions has positioned Denmark as one of the more progressive countries in sustainable transport. Now, fully electric battery powered vehicles are also entering.

The Scania truck, with an estimated range of up to 140 km, is planned to go into Coop’s operations in the first quarter of 2021. The range can be extended with fast charging opportunities, for example while loading or unloading goods.

“The green transition in the transport sector is going too slowly,” says Nicolaj Boysen, Logistics Director at Coop Danmark. “We have therefore chosen to take the lead ourselves to boost development and show that it is feasible.”

  • Scania will deliver 75 battery electric trucks to ASKO in Norway

Scania will deliver 75 battery electric trucks to ASKO in Norway

Scania will deliver up to 75 battery electric trucks to ASKO over the following three years. Earlier this year, ASKO started operations with four hydrogen powered fuel cell electric Scania trucks and in February, ASKO added two battery electric Scania distribution trucks to its fleet.

ASKO has now – within its three-year framework agreement with Scania for 2020-2022 – stated its intension to order up to 75 battery electric trucks.

”Our goal is to have an emission free fleet of trucks by 2026. The battery electric trucks from Scania are an important step on the journey towards fossil free transports for ASKO,” says Torbjørn Johannson, Chairman of the Board, ASKO NORGE AS.

Scania recently presented its approved Science Based Targets, which not only include a dramatic reduction of its own carbon emission but also its clear quantified aim to ensure reduced emissions among its customers.

Scania’s official launch plans for its battery electric trucks will be presented later in 2020.
