    Tourism in Slovakia at only 11% of the pre-pandemic values

    In April visits to hotels and boarding houses were one third ahead of March but still rose to only 11% of the pre-pandemic values, Slovak Statistical Office shows.

    The accommodation establishments were visited by 50 thousand people, which was by 89% less than the number of visitors two years ago in April.

    Two years ago (in April 2019), up to 442 thousand visitors used the accommodation services and reported 1,1 million overnight stays.

    A significant majority of visitors in Slovakia in April were also domestic tourists, representing 86,2% of the number of accommodated visitors (43 thousand people).

    In April, the most domestic tourists visited Žilinský kraj, Bratislavský kraj and Prešovský kraj.

    At the same time, accommodation establishments were visited by 7 thousand foreign visitors in April. A year before the pandemic (April 2019), their number exceeded 171 thousand. 

    In total, for the months of January to April 2021, 140,2 thousand visitors were accommodated in tourism establishments, which represents a year-on-year decrease by 87,1%.

    The number of domestic visitors decreased by 83,4% year-on-year in four months and the number of foreigners by 93,9 %.

    In 2018, the tourism industries produced a total value of EUR 9,9 billion and accounted for a share of 2,74 % of total GDP in Slovak economy and slightly increased year-on-year.

    The tourism direct gross domestic product reached the value of EUR 2,4 billion, which represented a year-on-year higher value of 10,8 %, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic reported.

    The number of people employed in tourism has been growing continuously since 2013, in 2018 there were 180,7 thousand. Most of them worked in food and beverage services and in passenger transport.

    In total, tourism participants spent almost EUR 5,9 billion (expenditures of domestic and foreigners in the territory of the Slovak Republic as well as expenditures of Slovak citizens on trips abroad).

    Total expenditures increased by 10,2 % year-on-year. The highest part of expenditures of visitors in the territory of the Slovak Republic (domestic and foreign visitors in the Slovak Republic) went to the payments for accommodation and food and beverage services (38 % of expenditures).

    The total number of holiday and business trips within the domestic, inbound and outbound tourism reached the value of 60.9 million trips and increased by 9,5 % year-on-year.

    In Slovakia, domestic visitors and foreigners made a total of 52,6 million trips, of which almost three quarters were same day trips.

    In June 2020, accommodation establishments in Slovakia continued to face drop in attendance, the number of guests dropped by more than 68 % year-on-year, number of foreigners by up to 86 %.

    In June 2020, 193.468 persons were accommodated in tourism establishments in the SR, which was by five time more visitors than in May 2020, however, attendance significantly lagged behind the situation in June 2019.

    The number of guests was lower by 68,3 %, year-on-year. The visitors spent 579.610 nights in the establishments which was a lower number by 63,2 %, compared with June 2019.

    The visitors in the whole SR were in particular, domestic visitors, for the third consecutive month, in June their number represented 82,5 % of the total number of accommodated.

    There is still only minimal attendance of foreigners, in hotels, boarding houses and other accommodation establishments only 33,8 thous. foreign visitors were registered. In the corresponding period last year, there were 242,4 thous. foreign visitors.

    Among the regions of Slovakia, the most significant year-on-year decrease of guests was recorded in the region of Bratislava by 82,8 %. For a long time, foreigners make up the majority of visitors, whose number was lower by more than 90 %.

    The most visited regions of Slovakia- Žilina and Prešov regions- recorded a year-on-year drop in the number of the accommodated persons approximately by 60 %.

    In June, on average, visitors spent 3 nights in accommodation establishments in the SR, of which domestic visitors 3,1 and foreign visitors 2,3 nights.

    In May 2020, only 7 % of visitors stayed in tourism accommodation establishments compared to May 2019. Only 2.3 thousand of foreign visitors stayed, show latest Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic data.

    In May 2020, 38.946 people were accommodated in tourism establishments in Slovakia, and the number of visitors fell by 93% compared to May last year.

    Visitors spent 146.726 nights in the establishments, which was by 89,9% less year-on-year.

    Although the number of visitors increased almost 6-fold in May compared to April, their number was only at a 7% level compared to the same period last year.

    In May, the total number of visitors in hotels, boarding houses and other tourism establishments reached 553 thousand of guests last year (in 2018 it was 473 thousand visitors).

    The majority of guests (up to 94%) were represented by domestic visitors, the number of accommodated foreign visitors was only 2,3 thousand. In the same period last year, there were 224,7 thousand of foreign visitors.

    The most visited region during May was the Bratislavský kraj (21,2% of all guests)

    It was followed by two regions, which have a leading position mostly in the number of domestic visitors – the Žilinský and Prešovský kraj.

    During May, visitors spent 3,8 nights in the accommodation establishments on average, including domestic visitors 3,8 nights and foreign visitors 3,5 nights.

    How many tourists visited Slovakia through travel agencies and tour operators

    In 2019, within the organized tourism, the number of inbound foreign visitors in the Slovak Republic reached over 330 thousand people (it concerns one-day visitors and foreigners on overnight stays).

    They spent in Slovakia almost 200 thousand days on overnight stays.

    At the same time via travel agencies and tour operators, altogether 760 thousand people travelled (one-day visitors and overnight visitors as well) and the number of stay days reached nearly 5,3 million.

    Top 5 European destinations for Slovaks in 2019

    The top 5 destinations to which the Slovaks traveled included Turkey with 131.328 visitors, Croatia with 83.382 visitors, Greece with 78.133 visitors, Bulgaria with 60.992 visitors and Italy with 57.536 visitors.

    The total turnover for the services provided exceeded EUR 740 million.

    In March 2020, 151.930 persons stayed in the tourism accommodation establishments in the Slovak Republic, two thirds of which were domestic visitors.

    The sharp decline in the number of guests and the number of overnight stays was the result of an emergency situation caused by the coronavirus.

    The number of overnight stays reached 515.914, of which overnight stays by domestic visitors accounted for more than 70 %.

    Compared to the same period last year, the total number of visitors decreased by 65 %, of which domestic visitors  decreased by 63,9 % and foreign ones by 66,9 %. The number of overnight stays was lower by 56 % year-on-year.

    During March, visitors spent an average of 3,4 nights in the accommodation establishments, including  domestic visitors 3,6 nights and foreign ones 2,9 nights.

    The most visited region was the Žilinský kraj, the total number of accommodated persons was almost 38 thousand, visitors spent the most nights in it, almost 126 thousand.

    Domestic visitors went mainly to the Žilinský and Prešovský kraj, in both regions their number exceeded 23 thousand and the number of overnight stays 80 thousand.

    The highest number of foreign visitors (16,9 thousand) visited the Bratislavský kraj, but they spent the most nights in the Žilinský kraj, where the number of overnight stays of foreign visitors exceeded 45 thousand.

    The number of visitors in Slovakia accommodation establishments continued to increase, though the growth rate was the slowest during the last eleven months.

    In February 2020, the number of visitors in accommodation establishments reached 482 189 persons and the number of overnight stays was 1 383 672.

    The number of visitors rose, year-on-year, by 10,3 % and the number of overnight stays by 10,6 %. However, the growth rate was in both indicators was the slowest during the last eleven months.

    Services of tourist accommodation establishments were used by 316,8 thous. domestic visitors. Their number increased year-on-year, by 12,8 %, representing more than two thirds (65,7 %) of the total number of visitors accommodated.

    The number of foreign visitors also increased, reaching a year-on-year increase of 5,9 % to 165,4 thousand.

    The visitors spent, on average, 2,9 nights in the accommodation establishments, of which domestic visitors 2,9 and foreign visitors 2,8 nights.

    The most attractive tourist sites in Slovakia

    More than a quarter of visitors (26,6 %) visited Žilinský kraj. The total number of accommodated persons in this region was 128 thous. They were predominantly domestic visitors, representing 64,1 %.

    The most attractive tourist sites included also Bratislavský and Prešovský kraj, with more than 90 thous. overnight stays in each of them.

    The total number of visitors increased year-on-year in all regions, in four of them it was higher by more than 10 %, most notably in Prešovský kraj, with a growth by 17,8 %. The number of domestic visitors grew in all regions, among foreign visitors it decreased in Nitriansky, Trenčiansky and Košický kraj.

    The number of accommodation establishments increased by 348 persons (by 8,5 %) year-on-year, based on the updated Statistical register of accommodation establishments by municipalities.

    At the end of February 2020, their number reached 4 464, there were 70,4 thous. rooms and 184,8 thous. of beds available. The number of rooms increased by 2,4 thous (by 3,6 %) and the number of beds by 8,1 thous. (by 4,6 %).
