    Unemployment rate in Czechia at 3.4% in May 2021

    The general unemployment rate of the aged 15–64 years in Czechia reached 3.4% in May 2021 and increased by 0.8%, year-on-year.

    The male unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, attained 2.8%; the female unemployment rate reached 4.0%.

    The employment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 74.0% in May 2021 and decreased by 0.1 percentage point compared to that in May 2020.

    The male employment rate was 80.8%; the female employment rate was 67.0%, both seasonally adjusted.

    The employment rate of persons aged 15–29 years, seasonally adjusted, was 45.9%, in the age group 30–49 years it attained 87.1%, and in the age group 50–64 years it got to 75.8%.

    Unemployment rate of the aged 15–64 years in Czechia reached 2.9% in October 2020 and increased by 0.9 p.p., year-on-year.

    The male unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, attained 2.5%; the female unemployment rate reached 3.4%.

    Employment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 74.0% in October 2020 and decreased by 1.2 percentage point (p.p.) compared to that in October 2019.

    The male employment rate was 81.0%; the female employment rate was 66.6%, both seasonally adjusted.

    The employment rate of persons aged 15–29 years, seasonally adjusted, was 45.6%, in the age group 30–49 years it attained 86.4%, and in the age group 50–64 years it got to 76.7%.

    Slovakia: Unemployment rate at 7,2 % in Q3 2020

    The corona crisis increased the unemployment rate in Slovakia to 7,2 %, leaving almost 200,000 thousand people without work.

    A growth rate of the unemployment accelerated in the third quarter, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic reports.

    The number of unemployed persons reached 196,5 thousand persons and was higher by 21,9 % year-on-year, which represents 35,3 thousand persons.

    The unemployment rate increased by 1,3 p.p. to 7,2 % year-on-year. It thus grew for the third consecutive quarter and reached the level of the turn of 2017 and 2018.

    In a quarter-on-quarter comparison (3rd quarter of 2020 compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020), seasonally adjusted unemployment increased by 10,6 thousand persons, which represents an increase of 5,9 % to 190,7 thousand persons.

    As a result of the corona crisis, the short-term unemployment rose

    The number of unemployed within six months reached 96,1 thousand, which means that every second person without work has become unemployed in the last six months.

    The share of this group in the total number of unemployed increased to 48,9 %, a year ago it was less than a third.

    Unemployment increased the most in the two most numerous age groups of unemployed, namely in the group of 35-49 years old by 34,7% and among young people 25-34 years old by 29 %.

    Number of unemployed decreased slightly in 55-59 years old and in 50-54 years old, year-on-year.

    UK: Unemployment rate at highest level in four years

    Unemployment rate in the UK reached its highest level in four years in Q3 2020 and layoffs reached a record high after the coronavirus pandemic significantly affected the market, BBC and Reuters reported.

    Between July and September 2020, the unemployment rate rose to 4.8% from 4.5%, and the number of those laid off reached a record 314,000, 181,000 more than in the second quarter of 2020.

    Companies increased the number of laid off employees, anticipating the end of the job support scheme, which was originally scheduled to end in December, but was extended until March 31, 2021.

    In Q3 2020, the number of unemployed rose by 243,000, the most significant advance since May 2009, when the United Kingdom was hit hard by the global financial crisis.

    Data shows a significant decrease, by 174,000, in the number of employees aged between 16 and 24, at a record low of 3.52 million.

    Whirlpool plant in Naples will be closed on October 31, the American home appliance manufacturer announced, despite the Italian Government’s attempts to maintain the activity of the unit.

    Whirlpool has 450 employees, in a region with one of the highest unemployment rates in Italy, ANSA and Reuters reported.

    The future of the Naples unit has been a source of tension between Whirlpool and Italian authorities, who say the closure violates previous agreements.

    Whirlpool officials say the Naples plant is not economically sustainable.

    Naples mayor, Luigi de Magistris, called on the government to ”do everything possible to avoid disaster”.

    Last year, Whirlpool reported that the production of washing machines in Naples is no longer profitable and it intends to sell the plant.

    413.241 people are registered as job-seekers in Austria

    This week, 413.241 people were registered as job-seekers in Austria at the Labour Market Service (AMS), Heute reports.

    There are about 4.000 more than in the previous week (409,356).

    AMS said Monday that 348.354 people are currently without a job, with 64.887 in training. Compared to the same time last year, there are 71,000 more jobseekers.

    Employment Minister Christine Aschbacher pointed out that the rise in unemployment is having seasonal effects: ”With the extension of short-time working and the Corona job offensive including work foundations, we are ready for the coming months.”

    In August 2020, in Italy, employment continued the growth already began in July and unemployment decreased, while inactivity kept on dropping, latest Istat data show.

    On a monthly basis, the increaseof employment (+0.4%, +83 thousand) concerned both men (+0.5%, +72 thousand) and women (+0.1%, +11 thousand), leading the employment rate to 58.1% (+0.2p. p.).

    In the last month, the drop of unemployed people (-0.9%, -23 thousand) involved only women (-3.0%, -36 thousand), where as men grew (+0.9%, +12 thousand).

    The unemployment rate decreased to 9.7% (-0.1 percentage points) while the youth rate increased to 32.1% (+0.3p.p.).

    In August the decline of inactive people aged 15-64 (-0.5%, -65 thousand) concerned only men (-1.7%, -85 thousand), while for women a rise was recorded (+0.2%, +20 thousand); the inactivity rate went down to 35.5% (-0.1 percentage points).

    The male employment rate was 81.3%; the female employment rate was 67.2%, both seasonally adjusted.

    The employment rate of persons aged 15–29 years, seasonally adjusted, was 46.0%, in the age group 30–49 years it attained 87.0%, and in the age group 50–64 years it got to 76.7%.

    The general unemployment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 2.8% in August 2020 and increased by 0.8 p.p., year-on-year.

    The male unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, attained 2.7%; the female unemployment rate reached 2.8%.

    Euro area unemployment at 8.1% in August 2020

    In August 2020, the euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate has continued to rise for 5 consecutive months, reaching 8.1%.

    The same trend has applied to the EU unemployment rate that reached 7.4% in August, show the latest figures published by Eurostat.

    Eurostat estimates that 15.603 million men and women in the EU, of whom 13.188 million in the euro area, were unemployed in August 2020.

    Compared with July 2020, the number of persons unemployed increased by 238.000 in the EU and by 251.000 in the euro area.

    In August 2020, 3.032 million young persons (under 25) were unemployed in the EU, of whom 2.460 million were in the euro area. In August 2020, the youth unemployment rate was 17.6% in the EU and 18.1% in the euro area, up from 17.4% and 17.8% respectively in the previous month.

    Compared with July 2020, youth unemployment increased by 64.000 in the EU and by 69.000 in the euro area.

    In August 2020, the unemployment rate for women was 7.6% in the EU, up from 7.5% in July 2020.

    The unemployment rate for men was 7.1% in August 2020, stable compared with July 2020.

    More people registered as unemployed in Poland at the end of Q2 2020

    The number of the unemployed registered in Polish labour offices at the end of June 2020 amounted to 1026.5 thousand persons (including 551.0 thousand women), Statistics Poland latest data show.

    It was higher than the one observed at the end of the first quarter of 2020 by 117.0 thousand persons (12.9%), while compared to the same period of the previous year, it was higher by 149.4 thousand persons (17.0%).

    Compared to the first quarter of 2020, an increase in the number of unemployed persons was observed among the population of men and women respectively by: 57.7 thousand (by 13.8%) and 59.3 thousand (by 12.1%).

    Compared to June 2019, the numbers of unemployed men and women registered in labour offices also increased respectively by: 92.5 thousand (24.2%) and by 56.8 thousand (11.5%).

    Compared to the first quarter of 2020, at the end of June 2020, an increase in the number of the unemployed was observed in all voivodships. The most significant increase was in voivodships: Śląskie (by 21.0%), Małopolskie (by 19.2%), Lubuskie (by 18.6%), Wielkopolskie (by 18.5%) and Dolnośląskie (by 16.1%).

    The number of unemployed people in Germany fell in September for the third month in a row, according to data released Wednesday by the Federal Bureau of Labor.

    The number of jobseekers fell by 8.000 this month to 2.907 million, while the unemployment rate in Germany fell to 6.3% from 6.4% in August.

    The Federal Labor Office reported that the number of people included in the ”Kurzarbeit” scheme – reduced working hours – fell to 4.2 million in July, from a peak of almost six million in April during the Covid-19 crisis.

    The unemployment rate in Greece in June 2020 was 18.3% compared to the downward revised 17.1% in June 2019 and to the upward revised 17.3% in May 2020.

    The number of employed in June 2020 amounted to 3.744.630 persons. The number of unemployed amounted to 836,637 while the number of inactive amounted to 3.312.753.

    The number of employed persons decreased by 174.217 persons compared with June 2019 (a 4.4% rate of decrease) and increased by 11.640 persons compared with May 2020 (a 0.3% rate of increase).

    The number of unemployed persons increased by 27.091 persons compared with June 2019 (a 3.3% rate of increase) and by 58.146 persons compared with May 2020 (a 7.5% rate of increase).

    The number of inactive persons, i.e., persons that neither work nor look for a job, increased by 108.669 persons compared with June 2019 (a 3.4% rate of increase) and decreased by 2.265 persons compared with May 2020 (a 2.1% rate of decrease).
