    Czech unemployment rate reached 2.7% in July

    The general unemployment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 2.7% in July 2020 and increased by 0.7 p.p., year-on-year.

    The male unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, attained 2.4%; the female unemployment rate reached 3.2%.

    The employment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 74.2% in July 2020 and decreased by 1.0 percentage point (p.p.) compared to that in July 2019.

    The male employment rate was 81.2%; the female employment rate was 67.0%, both seasonally adjusted.

    The employment rate of persons aged 15–29 years, seasonally adjusted, was 45.3%, in the age group 30–49 years it attained 87.5%, and in the age group 50–64 years it got to 76.3%.

    Euro area unemployment registered a slight increase and sits at 7.9%

    In July 2020 the euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 7.9%, up from 7.7% in June 2020.

    The EU unemployment rate was 7.2% in July 2020, up from 7.1% in June 2020, shows Eurostat.

    Eurostat estimates that 15.184 million men and women in the EU, of whom 12.793 million in the euro area, were unemployed in July 2020.

    Compared with June 2020, the number of persons unemployed increased by 336.000 in the EU and by 344.000 in the euro area.

    The unemployment rate for women was 7.5% in the EU, up from 7.3% in June 2020. The unemployment rate for men was 7.0% in July 2020, up from 6.8% in June 2020.

    In the euro area, the unemployment rate for women increased from 8.0% in June 2020 to 8.3% in July 2020 while it increased from 7.5% to 7.6% for men.

    422.910 job seekers were registered in Austria at the end of August

    At the end of August, 422,910 job seekers (incl. trainees) were registered with the Labour Market Service (AMS). This was 42,272, or 27.9%, higher than in the previous year.

    The unemployment rate by national definition rose by 2.2% points, at 9.0%, compared with August 2019.

    The unemployment rate according to Eurostat was 5.2% (+0.7% points) in July 2020.

    A total of 457.177 people were able to return to work in 2020. An estimated 3.768.000 people, or about 70.000 fewer than in August 2019 and -1.8%, were in employment at the end of August 2020.

    In the second quarter of 2020 there were 192.2 thousand unemployed persons, of whom 108.1 thousand (56.2%) men and 84.1 thousand (43.8%) women.

    The unemployment rate was 5.9%, 6.2% and 5.5% for men and women respectively. In comparison with the second quarter of 2019, the unemployment rate rose by 1.7 percentage points, registering an increase by 1.6 percentage points for men and by 1.8 percentage points for women.

    Education levels for unemployed persons

    Among all unemployed persons, 17.3% had attained tertiary education, 55.5% had completed upper secondary education and 27.2% had at most lower secondary education.

    The share of unemployed persons with tertiary and with upper secondary education was higher than in the second quarter of 2019 by 2.2 percentage points and 10.4 percentage points respectively, on the expense of the share of unemployed persons with at most lower secondary education.

    The unemployment rate by level of educational attainment was as follows: 3.1% for tertiary education, 5.9% for upper secondary and 13.4% for education lower than upper secondary.

    The growth of unemployment between the second quarters of 2019 and 2020 is mainly due to the increase of number of persons unemployed for less than six months.

    In the period concerned it went up by 56.8 thousand to 91.4 thousand persons (near half of the total number of unemployed).

    In the second quarter of 2020 there were 72.2 thousand long-term unemployed persons (unemployed for one or more years), representing 37.5% of all unemployed persons.

    The long-term unemployment rate declined by 0.3 percentage points to 2.2% (2.6% for men and 1.7% for women).

    Of all unemployed people 19.5 thousand (10.2%) were looking for first job.

    Unemployment rate in May 2020 was 17.0% compared to the downward revised 17.2% in May 2019 and to the upward revised 15.7% in April 2020, Elstat shows.

    The number of employed in May 2020 amounted to 3,729,591 persons. The number of unemployed amounted to 764,912 while the number of inactive amounted to 3,401,996.

    The number of employed persons decreased by 193,312 persons compared with May 2019 (a 4.9% rate of decrease) and by 128,924 persons compared with April 2020 (a 3.3% rate of decrease).

    The number of unemployed persons decreased by 52,396 persons compared with May 2019 (a 6.4% rate of decrease) and increased by 48,444 persons compared with April 2020 (a 6.8% rate of increase).

    The number of inactive persons, i.e., persons that neither work nor look for a job, increased by 205.247 persons compared with May 2019 (a 6.4% rate of increase) and by 77,988 persons compared with April 2020 (a 2.3% rate of increase).

    In June 2020 the euro area unemployment rate was 7.8%, up from 7.7% in May 2020. The EU unemployment rate was 7.1% in June 2020, up from 7.0% in May 2020.

    Eurostat estimates that 15.023 million men and women in the EU, of whom 12.685 million in the Euro area, were unemployed in June 2020.

    Compared with May 2020, the number of persons unemployed increased by 281.000 in the EU and by 203.000 in the euro area.

    Youth unemployment

    In June 2020, 2.962 million young persons (under 25) were unemployed in the EU, of whom 2.360 million were in the euro area.

    In June 2020, the youth unemployment rate was 16.8% in the EU and 17.0% in the euro area, up from 16.2% and 16.5% respectively in the previous month. Compared with May 2020, youth unemployment increased by 124 000 in the EU and by 80 000 in the euro area.

    Unemployment by gender

    In June 2020, the unemployment rate for women was 7.5% in the EU, up from 7.3% in May 2020.

    The unemployment rate for men was 6.7% in June 2020, up from 6.6% in May 2020. In the euro area, the unemployment rate for women increased from 8.1% in May 2020 to 8.3% in June 2020 while it increased from 7.3% to 7.4% for men.

    Over 3,1 million employed persons in Bulgaria in the first quarter of 2020

    In the first quarter of 2020 there were 3.107.2 thousand employed persons aged 15 years and over, of whom 1.667.1 thousand men and 1.440.1 thousand women, as Bulgarian National Statistical Institute latest report shows.

    The share of employed persons in the total population aged 15 years and over was 52.4% (58.7% for men and 46.7% for women).

    In the first quarter of 2020 there were 148.9 thousand unemployed persons, of whom 86.0 thousand (57.8%) men and 62.9 thousand (42.2%) women. The unemployment rate was 4.6%, 4.9% and 4.2% for men and women respectively.

    In comparison with the first quarter of 2019, the unemployment rate went down by 0.4 percentage points, registering the same decrease for men and women.

    In the first quarter of 2020 the total hourly labour cost (preliminary data) rose by 10.2% compared to the first quarter of 2019. The total hourly labour cost grew by 9.0% in industry, by 9.2% in services and by 8.1% in construction.

    According to the NSI business inquiries in June 2020 18.6% of the industrial enterprises pointed out the labour shortage as a factor limiting their activity.

    In March 2020 the average wage and salary was BGN 1 321 and rose by 1.0% compared to the previous month and by 5.9% compared to March 2019.

    Out of 238.000 persons, who had terminated their employment in the period 15 to 31 March 2020, 43% had found employment again by the end of May 20200.

    In six out of ten cases with the same employer with whom they were previously employed.

    According to Statistics Austria, 434.000 cases of dependent employment ended in this period, and in 358.000 cases new employment was taken up.

    The number of persons in employment according to the international definition was 4.132.700 for May 2020, still 135.800 below May 2019, but already 50.300 higher than in April 2020.

    Actual working hours also grew significantly in May, averaging 28.9 hours, 3.3 hours more than in April 2020.

    However, it was still 3.3 hours per week less than in the same month last year.

    Nonetheless, unemployment remained high in May at 264.600 unemployed persons.

    The scale of the decline in employment is more visible in the “labour reserve”, which grew from 128.800 persons in February 2020 to 213.800 in May 2020.

    The unemployment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 2.5% in May 2020 and increased by 0.4 p.p., year-on-year, Czech Statistical Office shows.

    The male unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, attained 2.2%; the female unemployment rate reached 2.9%.

    The employment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 74.4% in May 2020 and decreased by 0.5 percentage point (p.p.) compared to that in May 2019.

    The male employment rate was 81.4%; the female employment rate was 67.2%, both seasonally adjusted.

    The employment rate of persons aged 15–29 years, seasonally adjusted, was 45.7%, in the age group 30–49 years it attained 87.1%, and in the age group 50–64 years it got to 76.2%.

    In May 2020 the euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 7.4%, up from 7.3% in April 2020.

    The EU unemployment rate was 6.7% in May 2020, up from 6.6% in April 2020.

    These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

    Eurostat estimates that 14.366 million men and women in the EU, of whom 12.146 million in the euro area, were unemployed in May 2020.

    Compared with April 2020, the number of persons unemployed increased by 253 000 in the EU and by 159 000 in the euro area.

    Istat shows that in May 2020, in comparison with the previous month, the decrease in employment continued – at a slower pace – and unemployment returned to grow, against a marked drop of inactivity.

    Unemployed people grew (+18.9%, +307 thousand) more among women (+31.3%, +227 thousand) than men (+8.8%, +80 thousand).

    The unemployment rate rose to 7.8% (+1.2 percentage points) and the youth rate increased to 23.5% (+2.0 p.p.).

    The decline of employment (-0.4%, -84 thousand) concerned more women ( 0.7%, 65 thousand) than men (-0.1%, -19 thousand), and brought the employment rate to 57.6% (-0.2 p.p.).

    In May the decline of inactive people aged 15-64 (-1.6%, -229 thousand) was registered for both men ( 1.3%, -71 thousand) and women (-1.7%, -158 thousand), leading the inactivity rate to 37.3% (-0.6 percentage points).
