    Unemployment rate at 4.1% in Hungary

    KSH shows that in the period of March–May 2020, the average number of unemployed people was 190 thousand, and the unemployment rate was 4.1%.

    Men and women were characterized by almost the same level of unemployment, and the value of the indicator increased to a similar extent for both sexes.

    In May 2020, the number of unemployed increased by about 28 thousand people compared to the previous month. The average number of unemployed people was 215 thousand, and the unemployment rate was 4.7%

    Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed increased by 28 thousand and compared to May 2019 by 55 thousand.

    The unemployment rate rose by 0.6 percentage point in one month and by 1.2 percentage points in one year.

    The number of inactive people decreased significantly, by 59 thousand, as most of those who had previously become unemployed began to actively look for work after the restrictions on personal relationships were lifted.

    Of these, 31 thousand have started work, increasing employment levels.

    However, a further 28 thousand, despite actively looking for work and being able to start work within 2 weeks, could not find a job, increasing the number of unemployed.

    Latest ELSTAT data shows that the number of unemployed persons amounted to 745.093. The unemployment rate was 16.2%, compared with 16.8% in the previous quarter and 19.2% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

    The number of the unemployed decreased by 5.3% compared to the previous quarter and by 17.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

    The number of persons employed amounted to 3.852.615

    The employment rate decreased by 1.3% compared to the previous quarter and increased by 1.0% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

    Persons who are subject to a suspension of their contract are still considered to be employed, if the suspension period is less than 3 months or if they receive more than 50 % of their remuneration.

    The number of economically inactive under the age of 75, i.e. the persons who are neither working nor looking for a job, amounted to 3,311,960.

    The share of the inactive persons increased by 2.5 % compared with the previous quarter and by 2.4 % compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

    The Hellenic Statistical Authority show that the unemployment rate in March 2020 was 14.4% compared to 18.1% in March 2019 and to the downward revised 15.9% in February 2020.

    The number of employed in March 2020 amounted to 3,874,437 persons. The number of unemployed amounted to 653,686 while the number of inactive increased to 3,373,369.

    The number of employed persons decreased by 12,923 persons compared with March 2019 (a 0.3% rate of decrease) and by 10,263 persons compared with February 2020 (a 0.3 rate of decrease).

    The number of unemployed persons decreased by 203,288 persons compared with March 2019 (a 23.7% rate of decrease) and by 79,397 persons compared with February 2020 (a 10.8% rate of decrease).

    In April, a fall of the unemployed people (-23.9%, -484 thousand) was recorded for both men (-17.4%, -179 thousand) and women (-30.6%, -305 thousand), latest Istat data shows.

    The unemployment rate dropped to 6.3% (-1.7 percentage points) and the youth rate fell to 20.3% (-6.2 p.p.).

    In April 2020, the decline of employment (-1.2%, -274 thousand) concerned both men (-1.0%, -131 thousand) and women (-1.5%, -143 thousand), and brought the employment rate to 57.9% (-0.7 p. p.).

    In April the considerable growth of inactive people aged 15-64 (+5.4%, +746 thousand) was registered for both men (+6.0%, +307 thousand) and women (+5.0%, +438 thousand), leading the inactivity rate to 38.1% (+2.0 percentage points).

    In the last three months, also the number of unemployed persons decreased (-20.4%, -497 thousand), while a growth among inactive people aged 15-64 years was registered (+5.2%, +686 thousand).

    On a yearly basis, the decrease of employed people was accompanied by a fall of unemployed persons (-41.9%, -1 million 462 thousand) and a growth of inactive people aged 15-64 (+11.1%, +1 million 462 thousand).

    • In the 1st quarter of 2020, a long-term downward trend of unemployment rate stopped.
    • Unemployment rate rose for the first time after six years, year-on-year, by 1,1 %.

    The total number of the unemployed, according to the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, rose by 1,8 thous. to 161,6 thous. persons. Compared with the 1st quarter of 2019, the unemployment rate increased by 0,2%, reaching 6%.

    For women it grew by 0,2 p.p. to 6,2 %, for men by 0,1 p.p. to 5,8 %.

    Compared with the 4th quarter of 2019, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased by 6,2 thous. persons (by 4 %) to 160,7 thous. persons.

    The number of the unemployed persons increased in the majority of age groups. It rose the most in the age group of the 35-49 by 6 thous. persons. A year-on-year decrease was recorded in the age group 25-34 (by 6,8 thous. persons) and in the 55-59 age group (2,9 thous. persons)

    The unemployed persons, who have never had a job, represented 21,5 % of the total unemployment, their share decreased by 1 p.p., year-on-year. In terms of the economic activity of the last employer, the highest number persons was employed last in industry (23,3 %), in trade (8,8 %) and in accommodation and food services (by 6,7 %).

    Czechia: Unemployment rate reached 2.3% in April 2020

    The general unemployment rate of the aged 15–64 years, seasonally adjusted, reached 2.3% in April 2020 and increased by 0.2%, year-on-year, latest Czech Statistical Office data shows.

    The male unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, attained 2.0%; the female unemployment rate reached 2.6%.

    The employment rate of the aged 15–64 years, seasonally adjusted, reached 75.2% in April 2020 and slightly increased compared to that in April 2019.

    The male employment rate was 82.3%; the female employment rate was 67.8%, both seasonally adjusted.

    The employment rate of persons aged 15–29 years, seasonally adjusted, was 44.9%, in the age group 30–49 years it attained 87.7%, and in the age group 50–64 years it got to 76.3%.

    In the period of February–April 2020, the average number of unemployed people was 174 thousand, and the unemployment rate was 3.8%, latest Hungarian Central Statistical Office data show.

    Unemployment rate was lower for men than for women, with this indicator essentially stagnating for men and increasing for women.

    In April 2020, about 73 thousand people lost their jobs, of which 54 thousand became economically inactive and 19 thousand unemployed.

    In February–April 2020, compared to a year before

    Among men aged 15–74, the number of unemployed was 92 thousand, and the unemployment rate was 3.6%. In the case of women, the number of unemployed rose to 83 thousand and the unemployment rate to 4.0%

    Among people aged 15–24, the number of the unemployed was 35 thousand and their unemployment rate 11.2%. Nearly one fifth of the unemployed belonged to this age group. Unemployment rates for people aged 25–54, being in the so-called best working age grew by 0.4 percentage point to 3.5%, and for people aged 55–74 remained virtually unchanged, with 2.1%.

    The average duration of unemployment was 9.2 months; 25.7% of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more, i.e. were long-term unemployed.

    The average number of unemployed people was 187 thousand, and the unemployment rate was 4.1%

    Compared to the previous month, the number of unemployed increased by 19 thousand and compared to April 2019 by 29 thousand. The unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage point in one month and by 0.7 percentage point in one year.

    However, the number of jobless people increased significantly compared to the previous month, by about 73 thousand.

    The majority of people who lost their jobs did not actively look for work and / or could not start a new job within 2 weeks, mainly due to restrictions on personal relationships.

    Eurostat shows that between the third quarter of 2019 and the fourth quarter of 2019, the last quarter before COVID-19 containment measures began to be widely introduced by Member States, 2.8 million people in the EU (21.4% of all unemployed in the third quarter of 2019) found a job.

    During this period, 7.2 million (55.4%) remained unemployed and a further 3.0 million (23.2%) became economically inactive.

    Of all those initially in employment in the third quarter of 2019, 2.1 million (1.3%) became unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2019, and 3.5 million (2.3%) transitioned into economic inactivity.

    From those initially counted as economically inactive in the third quarter of 2019, 3.4 million (3.4%) moved into employment in the fourth quarter of 2019, and 3.3 million (3.3%) transitioned into unemployment.

    Greek unemployment rate is expected to record the biggest increase in a decade, suprassing the period 2011-2013, the Federation of Hellenic Enterprises (SEV) said in a report, cited by AMNA.gr.

    The report said that the balance of job flows in March fell to its maximum negative level since 2001 (-41,903 job positions), a figure worse from the 2011-2013 period when the collapse of the Greek economy was at its peak. 

    New hirings fell 49% in March compared with the same month last year (103,002 from 202,157), while dismissals fell 8.7 pct to 144,905 from 158,784. 

    SEV noted that two sectors recorded a positive balance of labor flows: public administration and defense (+1,115 job positions) and human health (+393).

    • Over the year 2019, according to Albanian Labour Force Survey estimates, labour force in Albania is 1.430 thousand persons.
    • Females account for 44.4 % of the labour force and males for 55.6 % of it.

    Employed are 1,266 thousand persons, from which females account for 44.5 % and males for 55.5 %. The number of unemployed is estimated in 165 thousand persons, of which 44.0 % are females and 56.0 % are males.

    The labour force participation rate for the population aged 15-64 years old is 69.6 %. For male population aged 15-64, the labour force participation rate is 16.0 percentage points higher than females. The employment rate for the population aged 15-64 years old is 61.2 %. Employment rate for females
    is 54.4 % and for males is 68.2 %. The gender gap in employment for this age-group is 13.8 percentage points.

    The services and agricultural sectors have the highest share of employed with respectively 43.5 % and 36.4 % of the total employment. According to the 2019 survey estimates, it results that 45.7 % of employed are paid employees, 32.3 % are self-employed (with employees or without employees) and 22.0 % are contributing family workers.

    Unemployment rate decreased

    The official unemployment rate, for the population 15 years old and over, is 11.5 % decreasing by 0.8 percentage points compared to 2018. For males, the unemployment rate is 0.2 percentage points higher than for females.

    Youth (15-24 years old) unemployment rate is 27.2 %, (27.8 % for males and 26.3 % for females).

    Compared to the previous year, youth unemployment rate has decreased by 1.1 percentage points.

    Over the year 2019, youth aged 15-29 years old neither in employment nor in education or training account for 28.9 % of the same age group population.

    • The general unemployment rate of the aged 15–64 years in Czech Republic reached 2.0% in March 2020 and decreased by 0.1%, year-on-year.
    • The male unemployment rate attained 1.8%;
    • The female unemployment rate reached 2.2%.

    The employment rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 74.5% in March 2020 and decreased by 0.7% compared to that in March 2019. The male employment rate was 81.3%; the female employment rate was 67.4%, both seasonally adjusted.

    The employment rate of persons aged 15–29 years, seasonally adjusted, was 46.5%, in the age group 30–49 years it attained 88.6%, and in the age group 50–64 years it got to 76.2%.

    The economic activity rate of the aged 15–64 years reached 76.0% and declined by 0.8% compared to that in March 2019. Following the seasonal adjustment, the male economic activity rate (82.8%) exceeded the female economic activity rate by 13.9%

    “Over a half of March was already affected by measures taken against the coronavirus spreading including temporary closure of many enterprises and schools. Many workers thus could not perform work activities and part of them were home quarantined or stayed at home receiving a carer’s allowance. It has not influenced employment or unemployment; however, it was significantly reflected in statistics of time worked”, Dalibor Holý, Director of Labour Market and Equal Opportunities Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office, noted.

    The corona crisis has an enormous impact on the Austrian labour market, show the latest data published by Statistics Austria. Starting with the national shutdown in mid-March 2020, unemployment increased almost instantly.

    More than 35.000 job losses were registered on 15 March alone. Thus, the national labour market agency recorded massive inflows (+65.7% compared to March of the previous year) into the unemployment register.

    By end of March, there were 504.345 (+199 934) persons registered as unemployed.

    Yet, this situation has no immediate impact on unemployment according to the international definition, as latest results of the Austrian Labour Force Survey conducted by Statistics Austria show.

    However, there is a clear decrease in the number of people in employment (-77.500; -1.8%) and a corresponding increase of economically inactive persons available to work but not seeking a job (+51.3% to 160 500).

    At the same time, 173.100 people stated that they had not worked at all or worked less than during a regular working week due to slack work in March 2020, this is seventeen times more than in March 2019.
