    Tohani made over 1 million bottles of Fetească Neagră wine in 2020

    Tohani Romania has exceeded the production of 1 million bottles of Fetească Neagră, the best-selling red wine variety in Romania.

    Investments in the production of this wine amounts to 6 million euros.

    Tohani has the largest cultivated area with Fetească Neagră in the Dealu Mare area, of approximately 100 hectares.

    Apogeum Fetească Neagră, one of the wines produced by the Tohani Romania team, was placed among 1% of the best wines in the world.

    The investment in the Fetească Neagră vineyard amounted to 3 million euros, while the dedicated winemaking line required an investment of 1 million euros.

    2 million euros have been allocated to support wines produced with this variety – through local marketing and international presence.

    Today, Feteasca Neagră became the star of the vineyard, in 2020 representing 75% of the total red wine sold by Tohani.

    Who drinks Fetească Neagră wine

    In Romania, Feteasca Neagră has become the most popular variety of red wine, being consumed mainly by Gen X and Millennials, who live in urban areas.

    Nationally, the areas where the Feteasca Neagră de Tohani is most frequently consumed are Bucharest, Prahova, Cluj and Brașov.

    For 2021, Tohani aims to maintain the production of Fetească Neagră at about 1 million bottles.

    A Reveal Marketing study found that frequent wine consumers segment is composed of 39% of Romanians. Low users represent 21%.

    Next is the medium users’ segment, made up of 29% of respondents, they usually consume wine about 1-3 times a month.

    Those who consume wine at least once a week know on average 7 brands, and those with moderate consumption (medium users) know 6 brands.

    Those who drink wine occasionally (once every few months or less – low users), on the other hand, know on average only 4 brands in the category.

    Red wine is Romanians’ favorite

    The main favorite wines are the sweet and semi-sweet ones, consumed frequently (at least once a week), by over 40% of Romanians.

    Regarding the preferred color for consumption, red wine is the most appreciated, so 30% of respondents said they usually consume it at least once a week.

    In the second place, when it comes to frequency of consumption, is the white wine mentioned by a quarter of Romanians (25%).

    Rose wine, even if it was not among the first mentions (21% said they consume it frequently), it has continued to grow in preference in recent years.

    Wineries in the Moldova region are the best known by Romanians

    The most famous wineries are those in Moldova, mentioned by 90% of consumers, followed by wineries in the heart of the country, Transylvania with 70%, then those in Muntenia with 62%.

    Romanians prefer to consume wines from Moldova wineries (76%), Transylvania (49%) and Banat (39%).

    Other wineries mentioned by consumers are those in the Muntenia region, preferred by 34%, Oltenia (25%) and wineries in Dobrogea (17%).

    In 2019, the sold production of wine (including sparkling wine, port and grape must) in the EU was around 16 billion (bn) litres.

    The largest wine producers were Italy, Spain and France, followed by Portugal, Germany and Hungary, Eurostat shows.

    Italy produced over 5,5 billion litres in 2019 (around 35% of total EU wine production), Spain produced 4,3 billion litres and France 3,4 billion litres.

    Italy EU’s top exporter of wines

    In 2019, the EU Member States exported 7.1 bn litres of wine.

    Almost half of this wine was exported to countries outside of the EU (3.1 bn litres, or 43% of the total wine exports), mainly to the United Kingdom (0.69 bn litres, or 22% of extra-EU exports) and the United States (0.65 bn litres, 21%), followed by Russia (0.28 bn litres, 9%) and China (0.25 bn litres, 8%).

    Italy was by far the top exporter of wine, with extra-EU exports of 1.1 bn litres in 2019, representing 34% of the EU Member States’ extra-EU exports of wine. It was followed by France (0.8 bn litres, 25%) and Spain (0.7 bn litres, 22%).

    Top importer: Germany

    The EU Member States imported a total of 4.8 bn litres of wine in 2019. Only 16% of this came from non-EU countries, notably from Chile (0.17 bn litres, 23% of extra-EU imports) and South Africa (0.16 bn litres, 21%).

    Among the EU Member States, the largest importers of wine were Germany (0.23 bn litres, or 30% of the EU Member States’ extra-EU imports), the Netherlands (0.11 bn litres, 15%), Denmark (0.07 bn litres, 9%), Sweden (0.06 bn litres, 8%), Belgium and France (both 0.05 bn litres, 7%) and Ireland (almost 0.05 bn litres, 6%).

    Ukraine will cut import taxes for „Made in EU” wines

    Ukraine will cut import taxes for wines produced in the European Union next year, as part of its obligations under the agreement with the EU, Reuters reports.

    Now, import taxes for wines produced in the European Union range from 0.3 to 0.4 euros per liter.

    Last year, Ukraine imported $ 146.7 million worth of EU wines, while in the first half of this year, imports amounted to $ 67.9 million.

    In 2014, Ukraine signed a comprehensive political and trade agreement with the EU.

    The agreement with the EU is allowing Ukraine free access to the 500 million consumers in the EU, the world’s largest and richest single market.

    Austrian Government makes beer, wine and schnitzel cheaper

    Austrian Government announced that the sales tax (VAT) on food (from 10%) and beverages (from 20%) is cut to a uniform 5%, Heute writes.

    Previously, the government had only decided to ease the burden on soft drinks. It was said at the time that a reduction was not possible due to EU requirements.

    Now beer, wine, cocktails and all other alcoholic beverages are also included in the tax cut.

    The tax cut is limited to the end of the year and will apply from July 1st. The relief volume is expected to be EUR 700 million.

    The temporary reduction of VAT to 5 percent is also planned for newspapers and other periodicals, as well as books and for visiting museums, cinemas or music events.
